US, MEXICO GOVERNMENT HOLD BORDER TALKS
This week representatives from the US and Mexican governments, along with several state governors, met in Mexico to discuss border issues. The meeting, which was scheduled several months ago, followed on the heels of the tragic deaths last month of 14 migrants who were abandoned in the Arizona desert. Immigration issues were expected to be a primary topic at the meeting, and the recent deaths gave them an even more prominent place.
According to Tomas Yarrington, the governor of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, ways to reduce border fatalities were the focus of the meetings of the governors. The Mexican governors supported the legalization of undocumented migrants as a way to reduce border deaths, as well as programs proposed by Mexican President Vicente Fox that would allow more Mexicans to legally work in the US.
Officials from the two federal governments also focused on immigration.
