CALIFORNIA CREATES OFFICE TO COMBAT FRAUD AGAINST IMMIGRANTS
The California State Attorney General this week announced the creation of the Office of Immigrant Assistance, designed to combat fraud perpetrated against recent immigrants, especially those who do not speak English. According to the Attorney General, Bill Lockyer, the office is needed more now than ever, with immigrants making up an estimated 25% of the state’s population.
The office will provide educational and outreach services designed to reach immigrant communities where people are often unwilling to seek official assistance because of their immigration status. Among the problems the office hopes to address are fraud committed by “notarios” and immigration consultants, wage violations, and other forms of fraud.
The success of the office will in large part depend on how well it is funded. There is currently a bill pending in the California General Assembly that would set aside 0,000 to make the office permanent.
