INS RELEASES REGULATIONS FOR SYRIAN ADJUSTMENT APPLICATIONS
Late last year, former President Clinton signed Public Law 106-378, which allows up to 2,000 Syrian nationals who have been granted asylum in the US to apply for adjustment of status independent of the annual limit on adjustment applications by asylees. Regulations implementing this law were published last week. To be eligible, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Jewish national of Syria
- Have arrived in the US after December 31, 1991, after being allowed to leave Syria by the Syrian government
- Be physically present in the US at the time of filing the adjustment application
- Have been physically present in the US for at least one year after being granted asylum
The INS must receive the application no later than October 26, 2001. People eligible for adjustment of status under this law who have already filed an adjustment application under another provision of law can request the basis for the application be changed to this law.
All applications under this law are to be filed with the Nebraska Service Center, and must clearly indicate that the application is being filed by a Syrian asylee under P.L. 106-378.
