IMMIGRATION ATTORNEYS SADDENED BY NEWS OF COLLEAGUE’S DEATH
This week the immigration world was saddened by news of the death of Daniel Levy, a well-known immigration attorney and refugee advocate. Originally from Peru, Mr. Levy was involved in the litigation of many important cases, including the case of six Iraqi opposition leaders who were detained by the INS. He was also the author of the “US Citizenship and Naturalization Handbook,” possibly the leading treatise on the subject.
Levy came to the US in 1970 to study philosophy and anthoplogy. In 1982 he entered law school, and upon graduation worked with the Lawyer’s Committee for Human and Civil Rights. There, he began his work with refugees. From 1986 to 1987 he worked with El Rescate Legal Services, helping Central American refugees pursue asylum in the US. For the next eight years Mr. Levy was an attorney with the National Immigration Law Center in Los Angeles where he helped train other attorneys.
Mr. Levy’s death followed a long battle with cancer. He was 48. |
