AFGHAN DETAINEE IN CUBA HAS US CITIZENSHIP
This week it was revealed that one of the detainees being held at the facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is a US citizen and was transferred to a military jail in Norfolk, Virginia. For weeks Yasser Esam Hamdi has claimed to have been born in Louisiana to parents from Saudi Arabia, where he moved as a small child. The Justice Department recently located a birth certificate confirming his claim.
It remains unclear whether Hamdi is considered a citizen of Saudi Arabia, as does his exact role in Afghanistan. Government officials are closely investigating whether he, at any point, formally renounced his US citizenship, and whether his actions in Afghanistan may have resulted in the loss of US citizenship.
If it is determined that Hamdi is a US citizen, he will likely face criminal charges in a federal court in Virginia, where the other US citizen found in Afghanistan, John Walker Lindh, is currently on trial.
