ATTACK ON AMERICA - IMMIGRATION UPDATE
Last weekend the three major charities providing compensation to victims of the September 11th attacks in New York City announced that they would extend the period in which people could apply for cash assistance. This prompted a number of immigration organizations to renew efforts to get the word out to non-English speaking immigrants. Even with the extension, however, advocacy groups are concerned that these immigrants will not be informed of the assistance available to them. The current deadline is March 8.

Despite having been absolved of any link to terrorist activities, the Justice Department has blocked the release of at least 87 detainees who have either been deported or granted voluntary departure. Most were arrested for visa violations in the weeks following September 11th, and many have spent more than three months in jail. Justice Department officials say that they are going through new information gained about Al Qaeda to ensure that none of the detainees have terrorist ties. Civil rights advocates are concerned by what they say is essentially indefinite detention without a criminal conviction or even charges.
