EU Warns France About Channel Tunnel The European Union has ordered France to take action against asylum seekers who have brought rail traffic in the Channel Tunnel to a standstill. The European Union has sent the French government a stinging letter, allowing until June for normal traffic to resume or France will face court action and fines from the Union. On Wednesday March 27, 2002, 150 asylum seekers stormed a rail yard, overwhelming a makeshift security fence and delaying rail traffic for several hours. *********** Nigeria Takes Action Against Child Traffickers Nigerian authorities have arrested the human traffickers attempting to smuggle twelve children out of the country. The suspects were detained in northern Nigeria while trying to smuggle the children to Libya, Israel and Italy. The twelve victims, all children, were released. ************ Chinese Migrants Protest Deportation from Hong Kong Hong Kong has decided that it will begin sending 5,000 Chinese migrants back to mainland China beginning next month. The decision has sparked a round of protests outside Hong Kong's top court, where migrants demand legal help in a campaign to avoid deportation. Some migrants, who fled China for a better life in Hong Kong, have said they would rather die than go back. ************ Pakistan Reduces Number of Foreigners Allowed in Religious Schools Pakistan returned a significant number of religious students to their home countries, in an effort to avoid al Qaeda from recruiting them. Many foreign students entered into Afghanistan to fight along side the Taliban against the US. In an effort to show its support for the US-led war on terror and to diminish its image as a safe haven for terrorists, Pakistan has ordered a crackdown on foreign students at religious schools.
