International Roundup

According to the Age in Melbourne , three men have been taken to Baxter detention centre after being found working illegally at South Australian vineyards. A tip led officials to a property at Penola, in the state’s south-east. This brings the number of unlawful workers caught in the region in the past three weeks to 12.

Two of the men, an Indonesian and a Malaysian, had overstayed their visas, and the third man, also a Malaysian, was working in breach of visa conditions. A statement, made by Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone, confirmed that arrangements are being made by the Baxter immigration detention facility for their removal from Australia .

BBC News in the UK reported earlier this week that a court in Bangkok convicted 136 North Korean asylum seekers of illegal entry into Thailand . They were part of a group of 175 North Koreans found hiding in a house in the Thai capital on Tuesday. Unable to pay the $160 fine they were sentenced to 30 days in jail. Once released, they are likely to be allowed to go to South Korea , which grants citizenship to North Korean defectors. While Thailand is becoming an increasingly popular transit for North Koreans, this group is the largest ever intercepted in the country.
