Department of Justice Revokes U.S. Citizenship for Participating in WWII War Crimes - December 1, 2006
The US Department of Justice has announced that a
federal court has revoked the
US
citizenship of Orest Galan, a former
Florida
resident for his participation in a Ukrainian police unit that murdered
more than 100,000 Jews in Nazi-occupied
Poland
. Galan joined the unit in January 1943 and served until May 1944.
According
to the Justice Department Galan joined the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police (UAP)
in the city of
L’viv
and participated in rounding up Jews, terrorized them, oversaw their
forced labor, killed those attempting to escape and delivered others to
Nazi extermination camps.
Galan
has admitted service in the UAP and has consented to the order revoking
his citizenship. He will return to
Ukraine
.
Assistant Attorney General Fisher
stated, “This case reflects the Justice Department’s dedication to
the principle that those who helped the Nazi regime carry out its
infamous designs do not deserve the privilege of American citizenship or
residence.”
Galan entered the
US
in 1950 and became a
US
citizen twenty years later. He is one of 104 individuals who have
assisted in Nazi persecution who have been successfully pursued by the
Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations. In addition,
more than 175 individuals who sought to enter the
United States
in recent years have been blocked from doing so as a result of OSI’s
“Watchlist” program, which is enforced in cooperation with the
Department of Homeland Security.
