Update
According
to The Tennessean, the
Nashville Metro Council recently held a meeting last week to discuss
anti-immigration bills that are under consideration within the city.
Approximately 200 community members showed up on November 21st
to oppose three ordinances which are viewed as discriminatory to
minorities and immigrants. After
the meeting two bills were struck down, leaving one bill, and “English
only” bill, on the table.
The
first bill struck down would punish landlords and business owners who
employ or provide housing to illegal immigrants.
The language of this bill largely reflects the bill passed in
Hazelton
,
PA
earlier this year. The
second bill eliminated sought to make English the official language of
Nashville
. The bill’s sponsor
argued that it is a “curse” to be considered a bilingual nation,
making such legislation necessary.
The
landlord bill has been defeated. The English language bill has been
postponed for consideration until February.
