PRESIDENT SIGNS BORDER FENCE LAW INTO LAW
We have not had much to say about Congress' passage of legislation to create 700 miles of new fencing along the US-Mexican border. Why? First, it is not clear Congress will even appropriate the money to put up the new fencing. Second, the legislation represents just a small portion of the total enforcement package pushed as part of comprehensive immigration reform efforts and to give too much attention to this bill might send the message that Congress took a significant step to deal with the nation's immigration problems.
They have not. This legislation is really a publicity stunt by Congress so legislators could go home to constituents and tell them they passed a "get tough" immigration bill. This bill will make virtually no difference in stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, it does not deal with the millions of people living in the shadows in this country, it does not create a needed guest worker program, it does not address tremendous backlogs in family and employment green card categories, etc.
