The BBC News reports that over 400 suspected illegal immigrants have been detained off the southern Italian island Lampedusa, according to Italian coast guard officials. The suspected immigrants crossed from Libya in a fishing boat. The boat was intercepted after one of the immigrants used a mobile phone to contact the Italian police on Sicily asking for help, reports said.
Lampedusa has been used consistently as a landing point by thousands of undocumented immigrants trying to enter the EU from Africa . Italian officials say that over 10,000 people arrived on Lampedusa in the first six months of this year alone.

UK Home Secretary John Reid intends to outline plans that will restrict Bulgarian and Romanian people’s right to work in the UK when the two nations join the EU next year. The BBC News reports that a Cabinet committee will consider his plan to place quotas on work permits. While the UK will take a limited number of unskilled Bulgarian and Romanian workers to carry out jobs like fruit-picking, Mr. Reid is expected to say that it will not continue to operate an ‘open-door’ policy. Bulgaria and Romania learned last month that they would become EU members in January 2007.
