Dear
Readers:
Last
week many people had difficulty reaching me because we were busy getting
H-1B applications out the door. We heard the cap was going to be hit
quickly and we wanted to make sure our clients had their cases filed on
time. After working late hours for several nights in a row, we put the
finishing touches on the applications and had them all sent by Fedex to
the USCIS service centers in
Vermont
and
California
.
This
week we deliver the most unwelcome news that the H-1B cap which opened
up on Monday for the 65,000 slots for fiscal year 2008 was not only
reached in a few hours (we predicted that), but more than twice the
number of applications predicted were received. According to estimates,
the USCIS received between 200,000 and 300,000 applications. Some of
them may be for cases not subject to the cap and some may be for
master’s cap cases (the 20,000 set aside for graduates of
US
graduate degree programs). But we expect the lion’s share to be for
the 65,000 cap which means that most people who filed cases will get
them rejected.
This
week we present a special issue of our newsletter covering the cap.
We
include an ABCs article on the subject, a commentary I’ve written,
links to a podcast and Powerpoint presentation I’ve recorded, the text
of the government’s instructions on the subject and information on
what you can do to make your voice heard in Congress.

In
firm news, we congratulate Jack Richbourg, an attorney in our
Memphis

the immigrant community here in our city. You can see the article on our
web site at www.visalaw.com/news/.
