Last week, the trial for a New York marriage scam involving legalization for hundreds of immigrants began last week, according to the Associated Press. U.S. Attorney Christine Wong accused former U.S. immigration official Peter Absolam of helping hundreds of people obtain immigration documents "based on fraud."
Allegedly, the scheme had U.S. citizens to receive payment to marry someone who otherwise would be unable to qualify for permanent residency, with Absolam acting as the intermediary between the two groups. Immigrants paid up to $16,000 to participate. "Some met their spouse only once, some not at all," Wong said. Wong said Absolam’s role was discovered when one of his potential customers reported it to government investigators. Absolam’s conversations with the customer were recorded, which revealed Absolom’s scam spread from April 2001 through 2005 and produced as much as $1 million from fees paid by immigrants.
