Legislative Update
Last week, GOP senators introduced a bill that aims to step up immigration enforcement measures. According to the Los Angeles Times, the bill aims to tighten enforcement on the border, mandate jail time to those who overstay their visas, and turn closed military bases into detention facilities.
"It’s a place people can go to see what we mean when we say ‘enforcement’" said Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), who describes the bill as "a compendium of all the law enforcement-related things we thought were important in the debate."
Lawmakers and others who are pushing for tighter immigration restrictions contend that if existing laws are more strictly enforced, undocumented immigrants will eventually leave of their own accord. Sen. Kyl, co-sponsor of the bill with Sens. Graham (R-SC) and McCain (R-AZ), said that he did not expect the bill to pass in its current form, but anticipated that lawmakers would cite it as a reference, using individual sections to introduce as amendments to future bills.
