In April of 2007, several Republican members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee introduced legislation, proposed by the Coast Guard, which would aid the Coast Guard battle undocumented immigration. Currently, the Coast Guard can only catch smugglers, but cannot prosecute them. The new legislation would give the Coast Guard greater authority to apprehend and prosecute maritime smugglers of illegal immigrants.

According to the Washington Post, A federal indictment has charged 13 Bulgarians and 15 U.S. citizens with conspiring to arrange or participate in marriages with Bulgarians to help the foreigners evade U.S. immigration law. U.S. citizens were being recruited and compensated to marry Bulgarians and the couples were not residing together, nor did they have the intention of residing together.
