Nearly thirty Mexican nationals with valid US working visas have claimed that they were kidnapped and threatened with deportation by Pascagoula, MI-area police officers. According to The Washington Post, the workers allege that Pascagoula Police Capt. George Tillman threatened to send them to jail if they didn’t return to work for a recruitment company.
The workers said that they received H-2B temporary visas to work for Southwest Shipyards, but left the company due to lower pay than promised and poor working conditions. All thirty of the workers left for Pascagoula Miss. , where they found work repairing ships.
The workers said an official from the labor recruiting company tracked them down and showed up with Tillman and two other officers. They said Tillman told them the recruiting company "owned" them and that they could be jailed if they didn’t return to their Texas employer. The thirty employees, backed by the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance and the American Civil Liberties Union, plan to file a lawsuit against Tillman of "kidnapping, kidnapping with intent to enslave, false imprisonment, and human trafficking," according to an ACLU press release.
