Legal status extended for Central Americans
The Boston Globe is reporting that the federal government has extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of people from Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras, by 18 months. The original TPS was granted in December of 1998, following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Mitch.
The new extension allows refuges from these countries to remain legally present until January 5, 2012. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that 66,000 people from Honduras and 3,000 people from Nicaragua are eligible for TPS.More than 200,000 Salvadorans were given temporary protected status following a series of earthquakes that devastated the country in 2001.
