Rep. Luis Gutierrez: We Were ‘This Close’ to Asking for Janet Napolitano’s Resignation

MSNBC reports that Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez and other immigration advocates almost called for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano. Democratic Congressman Gutierrez spoke on Up w/Chris Hayes about his and other advocates’ efforts to engage the President in a more aggressive immigration strategy. Rep. Gutierrez says that President Obama’s immigration order was the result of years of pressure. "I know he didn’t want to do it," Gutierrez says.

Texas Commissioner Pleads for Immigration Reform

The San Antonio-Express News reports that Texas Agriculture Commissioner is piloting a proposal by The Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture that calls for more legal workers and a path to ‘conditional status’ for illegal immigrants. Staples believes that without the necessary workforce, the agricultural economy suffers. The agricultural industry has historically relied on foreign labor, much of it from illegal immigrants, said Pia Orrenius, a senior economist at Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. House Judiciary Committee Chair Lamar Smith (R-San Antonio) introduced legislation last year that puts guest worker programs under the U.S. Department of agriculture, allowing 500,000 temporary workers into the country. However, Smith resists the idea of offering status to immigrants here illegally. Staples also resists the idea, saying that immigrants in the country should be able to pay a fine, undergo a background check, start working and pay taxes, but whether they can become citizens is a separate debate.
