Obama Signs Bill Extending Investor Visa to Israelis
The Jewish Light reported that President Obama signed legislation that would add Israel to the list of countries eligible for non-immigrant investor visas in the United States. The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and it will grant Israelis E-2 investor visas, allowing them to live and work in the United States in order to be closer to their investments. Israel will be added to a list of seventy-nine countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for E-2 status. The legislation was signed Monday, June 11, 2012.
The Hill reported that Sen. John McCain (Ariz) criticized President Obama’s decision to stop the deportation of certain illegal immigrants, saying that it was an overreach of the chief executive powers. On Friday, June 15th, the Obama administration announced it would stop deporting many young illegal immigrants. The policy allows immigrants who moved to the U.S. at a young age, who have lived in the United States for five years, have no criminal history, and who attend school or graduated from high school to stay in the country. The decision does not grant citizenship but it does remove the threat of deportation and allows those immigrants to work in the United States.
While many Republican lawmakers attacked the decision, the White House defended the constitutionality of the move, saying it was an enforcement decision and completely within the President’s authority.
Obama Immigration Step Leaves Rubio Plan Floundering
Reuters reported that President’s Obama’s decision to stop the deportation of young illegal immigrants has intercepted Republican efforts to fashion legislation in order to win political points with Hispanic voters. Republican Senator Marcio Rubio had been working for months on similar legislation that would have allowed some children of illegal immigrant a chance to stay in the United States legally while pursuing college or military careers. However, even before Obama’s "deferred action" order, Republican senators were struggling to overcome opposition to their bill from conservatives in Congress. As a result, Rubio was unable to commit to introducing the legislation this year.
Rep. Steve King to Sue Obama Administration over New Immigration Policy
The Daily Caller reported that Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) plans to sue the Obama administration in order to halt the implementation of their new "deferred action" policy. On a radio program hosted by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Rep. King said that he had successfully sued his own state governor on a similar separation of powers issue. King plans sue the administration for implementing a policy that he believes should have required legislative process and approval. King told The Daily Caller that the House Homeland Security Committee, on which he is chairman, will launch and immediate review of the administration’s activities.
