Kudos to CBS' Sixty Minutes for covering an immigration success story. 14 year old Freddy Adu from Ghana came to the US five years ago because his parents in Ghana won the green card lottery. Now Freddy is a soccer phenomenon and is promising to do for men's soccer what Tiger Woods did for golf. Adu is probably the highest profile person to benefit from the green card lottery in all the years the program has been in existence.

Computer World posts an interesting story Strapped Employers Hope to Expand Visa Program - Computerworld today outlining efforts to tweak the H-1B program to make it easier to keep highly educated workers with degrees from American universities in the US. The idea is simple - if we force these extremely bright folks to leave, they're only going to take their knowledge back to their home countries and aide the businesses that are competing with American companies. That results in more of the hated outsourcing. So by making it easier to keep these super-workers, American jobs are actually saved. Pro-immigration advocates need to keep hammering home this very powerful argument. Immigration - particularly the right kind of immigration - can save jobs for Americans.
The article highlights what will no doubt be the push of H-1B advocates - build a smarter H-1B program instead of just focusing on the cap. We should have a program that can flexibly respond to changes in the job market and which does not treat all H-1Bs equally. Workers in vital fields - medicine, nursing, teaching, research - as well as workers who are highly educated and compensated should have the flexibility of being exempt from the cap. And the cap for everyone else should rise and fall depending on the nation's unemployment rate.

The Wall Street Journal becomes the latest media outlet to condemn Lou Dobbs anti-immigrant campaign. Daniel Henninger, deputy editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page, writes in the Journal today that Dobbs is motivated by greed and that he has reversed a lifetime as an economic conservative to advocate for a completely contrary position that gets him high ratings.
