NEW DATABASE GOES ONLINE TO HELP DOCUMENT SEXUAL ORIENTATION ASYLUM CLAIMS
From the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission:
The Asylum Documentation Program is one of the three programs within IGLHRC and is run by one staffer with support from volunteers. The Asylum Documentation Program supports worldwide claims for political asylum made by those who fear persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV/AIDS status. This is achieved by providing documentation on human rights abuses perpetrated against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and those living with HIV/AIDS. We provide this information to persons considering an asylum claim and to their lawyers/advocates, as well as (in some cases) to other interested parties. We also help people contact immigration advocates or organizations whenever possible.
Statistics on the information we collect with our request for documentation form may be used to help support other asylum claims. Some or all of the following statistical information about a case may be shared upon request if available: country of origin, country of application, type of claim, basis for claim, gender of applicant, status: of the case to include outcome of one year bar cases, past or future persecution, and date of decision. IGLHRC maintains 144 country and 3 thematic packets.

WEB MARKETING
Folks here may know that I co-author the American Bar Association book THE LAWYER'S GUIDE TO MARKETING ON THE INTERNET. The book will be coming out in a third edition next year, but if you want to read a superb resource on the subject in the mean time, take a look at purchasing a report prepared by my co-author Deborah McMurray entitled AmLaw 100 Web Sites 2006 - An Analysis of Ten Foundational Best Practices. You can find it online at http://www.deborahmcmurray.com/amlaw100/.
The report provides readers with an excellent analysis of the most important elements of a law firm web site and then analyzes the web sites of the country's largest law firms to see which ones do the best job in each of the best practice categories. I found the report to be very helpful in reviewing our own web site and as we begin planning a major overhaul of www.visalaw.com, I have many of Ms. McMurray's suggestions in the back of my mind.
As an aside, Deb McMurray is one of the very top law firm marketing professionals in the United States and her expertise in this field goes back to the very earliest days of law firm Internet marketing. She's seen the long development in this field and that's reflected in her report. Buy it!

PRESIDENT SIGNS BORDER FENCE LAW INTO LAW
We have not had much to say about Congress' passage of legislation to create 700 miles of new fencing along the US-Mexican border. Why? First, it is not clear Congress will even appropriate the money to put up the new fencing. Second, the legislation represents just a small portion of the total enforcement package pushed as part of comprehensive immigration reform efforts and to give too much attention to this bill might send the message that Congress took a significant step to deal with the nation's immigration problems.
They have not. This legislation is really a publicity stunt by Congress so legislators could go home to constituents and tell them they passed a "get tough" immigration bill. This bill will make virtually no difference in stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, it does not deal with the millions of people living in the shadows in this country, it does not create a needed guest worker program, it does not address tremendous backlogs in family and employment green card categories, etc.
