Nonimmigrant Visas: Three year B-1/B-2 visas are available. Visas are issued in one day. Visa applications may be submitted in person, via drop box, or by mail (for applicants physically within the consular district). Travel agents are often used to submit B-1 and B-2 visas. Interviews are scheduled at the discretion of the consular official and interviews of younger applicants is common. There are no restrictions on re-applying if initially denied a nonimmigrant visa (though the visa issuance rate at the consulate is high). Immigrant Visas: The US consulate in Johannesburg has jurisdiction for immigrant visas for all of South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Mozambique. Interviews normally take one to two months to be scheduled after the applicant has a current priority date and all of the documents are in order. Military clearances are still required for all white males and can be obtained from the Chief of Staff, Personnel (War Records), P/B X281, Pretoria 001. Only long form birth and marriage certificates are acceptable and they can be obtained by writing to the South African Department of Home Affairs, Private Bag Z114, Pretoria 0001. Medical Exams: Appointment slots fill up quickly and you should allow two weeks for processing.
