NUMBER OF REFUGEES ADMITTED TO US TO DECLINE IN 1997 According to Clinton Administration witnesses testifying at a Senate Immigration Subcommittee hearing, President Clinton plans to cut the number of refugee admissions by 13% in the current fiscal year (running October 1, 1996 to September 30, 1997). The President has the power to set the number of refugees after he consults with Congress. The total number of refugees is expected to be 78,000 which is 12,000 fewer than admitted in the last fiscal year. Witnesses pointed to the drop in refugees from Southeast Asia. The President will reserve 5,000 refugee slots, however. < Back | Next >Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
