INS IMPOSES RECORD FINE FOR HIRING UNAUTHORIZED WORKERS
The Immigration and Naturalization Service has imposed a .5 million fine against Colin Cares, Inc., a janitorial and maintenance firm that supplies employees to clients on the east coast. The firm is based in Westchester, New York. The fine stems from 150 violations of knowingly hiring undocumented workers and continuing to employ aliens after the expiration of the worker's employment authorization document. The INS also found more than 2,500 paperwork violations relating to I-9 employment verification documents. The INS investigation also resulted in the dismissal of more than 2,500 workers out of 4,000 total workers at Colin Cares.
The INS also reported that it will be doubling the number of investigations officers in the worksite enforcement area. INS Commissioner Dorothy Meissner also noted that the Clinton Administration has earmarked million for worksite enforcement.
