The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has launched a World Wide Web site focusing on refugees and asylum issues. The address of the site is http://www.unhcr.ch.
The site is divided into the following areas -
UNHCR and Refugees - ordinary people who have left their homes to escape war, persecution and human rights abuse.
The World - Map- and text-based access to country-specific information about refugees.
Images - Photos depicting refugee life. A high-speed network connection is recommended.
News - Press releases and other timely information about refugee situations worldwide.
Issues - A topic-specific route to articles about refugee children, the environment, women's issues and many other subjects.
For Teachers - How to use the information on this site in secondary-school and university courses.
Publications - Back issues of Refugees magazine and other general-interest publications from UNHCR.
REFWORLD - Official documents of UNHCR and other U.N. agencies, country and legal information, and basic reference materials.
You Can Help - How to support the work of UNHCR.
According to UNHCR Commissioner Sadako Ogata, the site "will prove to be not just a very valuable research tool but also an intriguing new look at some old and difficult issues. I think we'll be seeing this site consulted by school-children as well as university students and people involved in refugee issues."
