IMMIGRANTS DRIVE POPULATION GROWTH IN US URBAN AREAS A new US Census report shows that despite the exodus of middle class people from cities to suburbs, major urban areas continue to grow in population. And according to some experts, like Jeffrey Passel, an Urban Institute demographer, the population growth is largely due to immigration. Immigrants still continue to settle in major urban areas like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. For example, while more than a million people left New York since the beginning of the decade, nearly three quarters of a million immigrants moved in. That, combined with more births than deaths, has led to a net increase in population. Of course, whether one interprets these figures as good or bad totally depends on your political views. Some may say that immigration is saving cities from serious decline. Others may say the opposite - that cities remain overcrowded an poor due to immigration.
