UNIVERSITY CORNER: USIA UPDATES EXCHANGE VISITOR SKILLS LIST
The United States Information Agency has revised the J-1 Exchange Visitor Skills List to cover a number of revisions incorporated over the last 13 years. The list affects thousands of scholars at American universities studying or training in specialties where experts are considered to be lacking in a particular country. The new list goes into effect on 17 March 1997 and was published on pages 2448-2516 of the 16th January 1997 Federal Register. J-1 visa holders studying in areas covered under the skills list are nor permitted to change non-immigrant visa status in the US or switch to permanent residency until they have either returned to their home country for a two year period or they have received a waiver of the requirement. Among the changes incorporated into the new list are the addition of the People's Republic of China and Iraq adn the deletion of Afghanistan, Libya, Cambodia, South Africa, Iran and Vietnam.
