STUDY SHOWS NUMBER OF ILLEGAL MEXICANS LESS THAN POLITICIANS SAY A two year analysis of US and Mexican census data reveals that the number of undocumented Mexicans settling in the US each year is only about 105,000, far less than the 150,000 to 230,000 estimates given by the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the US Census Bureau. The study was sponsored by the US and Mexican governments in early 1995 and was written by a team of twenty well-known demographers and scholars - ten from each country. The study also revealed that migrants are traveling back and forth less than in previous years. This may be attributed to INS crackdowns at the border which make it more difficult to successfully cross without inspection. Further, the study showed that Mexicans in the US send an estimated $2.5 billion to $3.9 billion each year. The study says that this is about half of the direct foreign investment in Mexico.
