INS CORRUPTION IN SEATTLE CAUSES DISRUPTION IN PROCESSING
In early August, an 18 year old worker at the Seattle, Washington INS office was indicted for stealing checks attached to applications sent in to the office. These applications, all filed between August and October of 1997, were not processed. So far officials have identified 73 people affected.
While the INS plans on working with the people who had checks stolen, and will not make them pay the fee again, this will be difficult for applicants who paid with money orders and did not either keep the carbon or make a photocopy.
The situation will also prove difficult for persons who were here illegally and were filing to adjust their status. If their applications are not verified, these applicants will be found to have missed the January 14, 1998 deadline to adjust status within the US.
The number to call if you think you may be a victim of this theft is 206-553-0621.
