CONSULAR FOCUS: STATE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES PLAN TO IMPROVE PROCESSING OF AFFIDAVITS OF SUPPORT
The State Department efforts at streamlining the immigration process have received another boost. Beginning December 14, Affidavit of Support Form I-864 will be mailed directly to the U.S. petitioner seeking to bring someone into the country. Before this change, the form was mailed to the prospective immigrant abroad, who than had to forward it to the U.S. petitioner, who filled it out and then sent it to the appropriate Consulate or Embassy.
Another change relating to Affidavits of Support will go into effect on January 4, 1999. Affidavits of Support that are to be sent to the three busiest visa processing posts (Ciudad Juarez, Manila, and Santo Domingo) are now to be first returned to the National Visa Center. There they will be examined to ensure they include all required information, and if anything is lacking, the NVC will contact the U.S. petitioner and aid them in proper completion of the form.
It is hoped that these two changes will reduce processing times and ensure all papers are in order at the time of the visa interview, as well as lead to fewer refusals of visas on the grounds of incomplete documentation.
