CONSULATES CLOSE TEMPORARILY IN WAKE OF STRIKES ON IRAQ
In the wake of the joint US and Great Britain's military strike on Iraq, all US consulates in Africa, except for those in Nigeria and South Africa, closed temporarily earlier this month. The move was a precautionary effort to avoid terrorist strikes such as those that occurred this summer in Kenya and Tanzania. The embassies closed during the US attacks and opened shortly after the attacks ended.
While a number of officials wondered whether closing so many consulates was necessary, the State Department felt the move was justified in light of events this summer and recent threats addressed to embassies in Africa.
The Nigerian and South African embassies remain open because they are the busiest in Africa. Some critics point out, however, that terrorist threats in Nigeria and South Africa are also quite real and those consulates also should have been closed.
Dependents of embassy personnel in Kuwait and Israel were also instructed to leave the region because their safety could not be guaranteed in the event of chemical weapons strikes.
Security in the US was also tightened at airports and government buildings.
