IMMIGRATION COMMITTEE MEMBER SONNY BONO DIES IN SKI ACCIDENT The death of entertainer turned politician Sonny Bono has been widely reported in the media, but Congressman Bono's work in the House of Representatives has not been discussed nearly as much. Bono was elected in 1994 and sought out a spot on the House Immigration Subcommittee. Bono reportedly had problems with the INS at a restaurant he owned before becoming mayor of Palm Springs, California in the mid-1980s. Perhaps that is why he tended to have a more open attitude toward immigration than many of his Republican colleagues and frequently voted with Democrats on immigration questions. Bono's widow Mary will be running to succeed her late husband. In all likelihood, she will be opposing Ralph Waite, a Democrat best remembered for playing John Walton on the popular 1970s television series "The Waltons."
