HAITIAN DEPORTATIONS HALTED

Last month we reported that the President signed an order granting a year's legal stay to Haitians who entered the US in parole status or who had applied for asylum before December 1995. This month, we have more good news for the Haitian community. The Clinton Administration has ordered a halt to deportation proceedings for an estimated 30,000 Haitians.

While the halt to deportations is welcome news, the permanent fate of Haitians has still not been determined. Also, Haitians who entered after the end of 1995 are not covered by the directive. However, a report in the January 15th Miami Herald indicates that the INS plans on issuing another directive to include that group.
