US "BORDER CZAR" ENDS HIS REIGN
Alan Bersin has been the border's "top cop" since 1995, but on June 15 he resigned as US attorney for San Diego and Imperial counties to run the San Diego public schools. Attorney General Janet Reno has not yet decided whether San Diego's Federal Prosecutor will inherit the job or if the post will move somewhere else.
Politicians and activists on both sides of the immigration issue have praised Bersin's efforts and his successes during his term, especially the tightening of the US border with Mexico. He does have his critics, though. When he held a town hall meeting to discuss his plans for the San Diego public schools, Bersin encountered many questions and comments about his immigration policies.
