PAKISTANI NUCLEAR SCIENTIST DEFECTS TO US
Claiming that he was a nuclear scientist with top secret Pakistani nuclear information, Iftikhar Chaudhry Khan made headlines around the world by defecting to the US on May 22, 1998. The 29-year-old offered to tell American officials everything he knows about his country's nuclear program, including Pakistan's planned nuclear strike on India. However, in a dramatic development, it has been reported by several sources that Khan is not a nuclear scientist; rather, he is a low-level accountant in Pakistan who has absolutely no access to any government nuclear secrets. Khan's lawyers have not yet issued a response.
In a related development, the US Senate voted in favor of a bill that would allow President Clinton to waive economic sanctions against India and Pakistan for up to one year. The passage of this bill and the fact that no mention of visa restrictions has been heard from the President makes it increasingly likely that the recent nuclear tests by India and Pakistan will not lead to sanctions in the immigration area.
