EXECUTIVE OFFICE FOR IMMIGRATION REVIEW LAUNCHES PILOT PROGRAM FOR RIGHTS PRESENTATIONS
In an effort to obtain hard data on the benefits of rights presentations to those representing themselves in immigration proceedings, the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) has launched a pilot program that allows three organizations to conduct these presentations. The Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), the American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education, Center for Immigration Law and Representation (ProBAR) and Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project, Inc. will share $60,000 in funding to implement this program. The pilot program is set to last no longer than 90 days.
Currently, Immigration Judges are required to make sure that unrepresented aliens understand the charges against them, have access to facts, documents and witnesses, are aware of their procedural rights and their available remedies. This places a severe time burden on the Immigration Judge. The EOIR hopes that informing aliens of their legal rights before proceedings begin will defray this burden.
