NEW INS STATISTICS SHOW SURGE IN DEPORTATIONS
The Immigration and Naturalization Service has release statistics showing a 70% increase in deportations in the last quarter of fiscal year 1997 (ending September 30, 1997). And of the 34,134 deported aliens, 12,755 were removed for having criminal convictions. Furthermore, for the first quarter of fiscal year 1998, criminal deportation increased by 11% from the previous year.
In fiscal year 1997, the INS deported more than 113,000 people and the agency has set a goal of 127,300 deportations for fiscal year 1998.
Still, hardliners in Congress criticized the INS claiming the increase was expected as a result of a massive infusion of money into the agency and that more should have been achieved.
