IMMIGRATION AND THE INTERNET: THE FEDERATION FOR AMERICAN IMMIGRATION REFORM

After browsing through an issue or two of this publication, our editorial bias is obvious. We think a fair, open immigration system is an important reason for America’s success and that it is in the country’s best interest for this to continue. Nevertheless, we try to report accurately on all the news related to immigration, whether it is favorable or not, because it is important to be well-informed on the subject in order to engage in a healthy debate.

In that spirit, this month we feature the web site of the nation’s leading anti-immigrant organization, The Federation for American Immigration Reform, commonly referred to as FAIR. It recently came to my attention that several immigration restrictionist organizations subscribe to this publication presumably because of the information we provide. And now it is time to confess that we use the FAIR web site for the same purpose - it has a wealth of useful and reliable information.

The FAIR site is located at
http://www.fairus.org. Click on the “What’s New” button when you initially visit the site and scan down to the summary of immigration news. Everyday, the site is updated to include blurbs of immigration-related stories from major news publications across the US. Some of the blurbs contain links back to the articles if they were published on the web.

Go down further and you’ll see a link to “Congressional Hearings” which contains information on Congressional scheduling of immigration-related bills. The page also has a link to a short summary of each immigration-related bill in both Houses.

The FAIR site also contains what you would expect - lots of documents presenting FAIR’s viewpoints on immigration. I also think it is useful to look at these materials from time to time in order to be able to respond adequately to FAIR’s arguments (though I confess to only being able to handle reading their propaganda in small doses). Nevertheless, anyone trying to keep up with immigration news will find the site helpful.
