THREE INS BORDER INSPECTORS ADMIT TO ILLEGAL DRUG CORRUPTION
Three INS border inspectors have pled guilty to charges of drug corruption after being indicted in January. One, Martin Roberto Ronquillo-Roja, pled guilty to attempting to import cocaine. A second, Rafael Landa, pled guilty to conspiring to import cocaine and was required to forfeit $ 300,780 in drug money. The third, Jesus A. Corella, who attorneys for the other agents suspect of being the informant, pled guilty to accepting $ 75,000 in bribes to allow cars loaded with cocaine to enter the U.S. None of the three have yet been sentenced. Each faces about 10 years in prison, but the amounts to be served may be lowered in light of other considerations, such as their public service, and any possible cooperation with further investigations. The plea agreements were sealed, which is often an indication that an investigation into related matters is ongoing. A fourth agent, Maria De los Angeles Alabado, was indicted at the same time, on charges of selling immigration documents for $ 500 each on three separate occasions. She remains free pending trial.
