U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR FINES COMPANY FOR H-1B WAGE VIOLATIONS
Exotic Granite and Marble, Inc., a California manufacturer, has agreed to pay $ 107,000 in back wages and a $ 3,000 civil fine in settlement of a Department of Labor suit alleging violations of the H-1B visa wage requirements. By law, an employer who seeks an H-1B worker must assure the government that the worker will in fact receive at least the prevailing wage in the area for the job that is being done. According to the U.S. government, Exotic Granite hired three Indian nationals, one as an engineer, another as an accountant, and the third as a sales manager. The men were paid between $ 24,000 and $ 30,000 annually; government attorneys argued they should have been paid at least three times that much. One of the employees will receive $ 66,000 in back wages and another will receive about $ 33,000. The third employee involved did not receive any back wages. Exotic Granite, however, admitted no wrongdoing.
