CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 187 DEALT MAJOR BLOW
Gov. Gray Davis has reached an agreement with pro-immigration advocates to no longer appeal a federal court ruling that found much of Proposition 187 unlawful. Proposition 187 is a measure passed in 1994 that would deny illegal immigrants access to most public benefits and require many public officials to turn in illegal immigrants to the authorities. The deal followed a three month period of mediation on the matter. In return for dropping the appeal, the opponents of Proposition 187 will also drop further challenges to the measure.
A few relatively minor aspects of Proposition 187 will remain. They generally involve imposing state criminal penalties for creating, using and selling false documents to hide one’s illegal immigration status.
Davis’ move followed a California Supreme Court ruling that declined the request of a taxpayer organization, Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association, to halt the federal mediation on Prop 187.
