ACCUSATIONS OF RACISM DURING INS RAID LEAD TO SENSITIVITY TRAINING, BUT NO APOLOGY During a February raid at Wilwood Engineering in Camarillo, California, an INS agent made racially derogatory remarks to Latino and Jewish employees, according to the president of the firm, Bill Wood. In response, the INS has ordered that all agents in four Southern California counties attend cultural sensitivity training classes. The INS, however, has not apologized to Mr. Wood or the employees who were insulted. In fact, according to Mr. Wood, he has had no contact with the INS since the raid – the only news he hears about the incident is what the INS tells the press. The Los Angeles area District Director, Thomas Schiltgen, admits that there is evidence one agent behaved inappropriately during the raid, and that this agent faces disciplinary action, but won’t name the agent or the possible punishment. He also acknowledges that one Wilwood employee who was detained on suspicion of working without permission did in fact have employment authorization. < Back | Next > Disclaimer: This newsletter is provided as a public service and not intended to establish an attorney client relationship.
