AMERICAN IMMIGRATION LAWYERS ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO REVERSE SECTIONS OF THE 1996 IMMIGRATION ACT
The American Immigration Lawyers Association has embarked on a campaign to reverse the worst excesses of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Control Act of 1996. The "Fix 96" campaign is intended to address a law that AILA believes "violates America’s basic notions of fairness by changing the rules in the middle of the game, prohibiting people from having their day in court, and mercilessly separating families. "
AILA members will advocate for immigrants in this legislative over the next several months and will assemble in Washington in December to take the case directly to members of Congress.
Part of the campaign will involve bringing to Congress’ attention examples of cases where the 1996 law caused tremendous and unfair hardship. AILA member lawyers will be collecting these stories from their clients and working with the national advocacy team at AILA to make sure that the voices of these people are heard.
