IMMIGRATION AGENCIES CLAIM Y2K BUG NO LONGER A THREAT
The three major agencies that handle immigration matters all claim to be ready to handle any Y2K problems that may come up and immigration processing will continue after the new year without major problems.
Immigration lawyer Mark Ivener of Los Angeles surveyed the Immigration and Naturalization Service, State Department and Department of Labor to find out about the Year 2000 progress. He reported his findings recently to the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
The Department of Labor claims the LCA and alien employment certification program for green card applicants was fixed for Y2K in May 1998 and all work on Mission Critical systems was completed March 31, 1999.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service claims to have had an active Y2K program for several years and had its basic Y2K work completed by the end of last year.
The State Department reports it has completed its own Y2K work, but that it remains vulnerable to outside Y2K failures by other countries, companies and educational situations. The State Department claims to have all of its systems operating correctly as of March 31, 1999. It has mainly been testing the changes since then.
