AGENT RECEIVES $ 400,000 SETTLEMENT IN BIAS SUIT AGAINST INS
Jorge Guzman, a 12-year veteran of the INS, has accepted $ 400,000 in settlement of his claims against his employer, based on 10 years of harassment because he is Latino. The harassment included two dozen internal investigations directed against Guzman, culminating with an illegal search of his home. That illegal search was conducted by officials of the Office of the Inspector General, an internal watchdog agency within the Justice Department. The officials claimed they had consent to search Guzman's house, but a federal jury disagreed, finding that officials had violated Guzman's constitutional rights. Despite being the subject of investigations ranging from charges of stealing evidence to drinking while on duty, Guzman was never once reprimanded. His record, however, has yet to be officially cleared of the allegations.
