HOMOSEXUALS PROTEST FOR EQUAL IMMIGRATION RIGHTS
The Gay and Lesbian Immigration Rights Task Force (GLIRTF) organized a protest held outside the New York City Immigration and Naturalization Service office, bringing attention to what they see as the U.S. government's discrimination against homosexuals attempting to immigrate to the U.S. The INS called the protest misdirected, saying the matter is not really one of immigration, but of the general nationwide ban on same-sex marriage. Because only opposite sex marriages are recognized by the U.S. government, people cannot petition for partners of the same sex as a spouse. According to GLIRTF attorney Suzanne Goldberg, as many as 10,000 couples may be affected by the U.S. government's discrimination against same-sex marriages. The GLIRTF would like for Congress to create a special category for long-term same-sex relationships that would allow a foreigner with a partner to live in the U.S. Ten countries recognize same-sex relationships for immigration purposes, including Canada, Australia and Britain.
