INS RELEASES NEW NATURALIZATION GUIDE
The Immigration and Naturalization Service has released a new publication intended to make the naturalization process easier to understand. The publication is entitled "A Guide to Naturalization" and can be found in the Documents Collection of our web site (http://www.visalaw.com/docs). The new INS publication is not without problems, however. For example, it contains an error that could make people ineligible for citizenship. The guide, aimed at making the naturalization process easier to understand, misstates the rule on Selective Service Registration. In the guide, male immigrants are told they should register when they are over 26 years old. The real requirement is that all male immigrants register with Selective Service when they are at least 18 but not yet 26 years old. The INS admits its error, but has no plans of recalling the erroneous publication, of which 700,000 copies have been distributed. The Service says the mistake will be corrected for the next printing, which is set to occur sometime in March.
