H-1B VISA SHORTAGE’S IMPACT ON UNIVERSITIES
University officials are already planning for the changes the H-1B visa shortage is forcing on them. Many foreign college professors are employed by US universities, most of them on H-1B visas for highly skilled workers. Because the visa cap for this year has already been reached, no new visas will be issued until October 1, 1999.
For colleges and universities, this means classes taught by foreign nationals will have to be cancelled or rescheduled. While universities use only about 5% of all H-1B visas issued, the roles filled by H-1B visa holders at the schools are often crucial. Inability to obtain a visa for a critical researcher means the research project will be delayed. Also, the visa shortage means the university is not able to hire the candidate it feels is best qualified for the position.
