INS REPORT ADMITS DISCRIMINATION EXISTS IN SOME WORKPLACE RAIDS
The INS Office of Internal Audit has released a report concluding its investigation of a workplace raid at an engineering firm in Camarillo, California. The investigation was initiated following complaints by the firm’s owner, Bill Wood. He did not complain about the fact that he was raided by the INS, but the fact that during the raid INS agents used racially discriminatory remarks to his Hispanic employees, and made inappropriate religious remarks to an employee who is an Orthodox Jew. Workers were addressed with terms like “Pedro” and “rabbi.”
Furthermore, according to Wood, during the raid no white employees were questioned, but the agents were very aggressive with his Latino employees, even those who were US citizens.
The INS found that its agents acted unprofessionally during the raid. It also noted a much deeper problem with the methods by which agents identify individuals who may be illegal aliens.
To date, none of the INS agents have been disciplined.
